Up North Part 2: Catskills
For a bit more of a rustic country experience visit the Catskills where there’s an abundance of hiking trails, organic cafes and markets. Phoenicia, Saugerties, Woodstock and Kingston are great places to start just 2-2 ½ hours from NYC.
Phoenicia Diner is a good place to fuel up with brunch. The charming old-school diner serves one of the best Bloody Mary’s I’ve ever had and a perfect selection of farm fresh eggs, pancakes and grass-fed burgers. Be prepared for a bit of a wait though!
For a bit of a thrill, go across the street to Town Tinker Tube Rental in Phoenicia and go tubing down the Esopus Creek. And if you haven't had enough of nature just yet, take a hike on the Vernooy Kill Falls trail which leads to a rewarding waterfall.
Early evening stroll in Woodstock is a nice way to stretch your tired legs and even better would be a stop at Shindig for a drink and small bar snack. Commune Saloon is the perfect summer evening spot for a group dinner offering simple fare with long communal tables around a fire pit for adults and children to enjoy alike. Inside there’s also lots of communal lounge seating with board games for those who want a little bit of competitive fun!
The next morning, an early breakfast in Kingston at Outdated is an ideal way to kickstart the day. The inventive juice, vegan, gluten-free and staple breakfast offerings are sure to please everyone. And leave some time to explore the antiques and trinkets for sale!
For another day of hiking there is a stunning trail near Kingston in the Catskill State Park around Ontera Lake.
If there is time, don't skip taking a refreshing dip in the Ashokan Reservoir before driving back to the city.
