Saturdays: Flea & Eats in Fort Greene
After being away from the city most weekends over the summer, I was reminded of the thrill of urban exploring as I set out on a hunt for treasures at the Brooklyn flea and found myself wondering around Fort Greene one sunny Saturday.
The vintage stalls at Fort Greene Flea have great belts, bags and accessories to sift through. There are also some great reworked vintage dresses and antique white linen French blouses for every taste! One of my favorites is Superfussy which has a mix of Turkish hamam towels, Moroccan silk tunic dresses and Peruvian skirts for both adults and children. I made out with a great white tunic with gray stitching and details along with a bright red and purple print 70's inspired dress.
But most of my attention goes to the salvaged furniture and antique stalls where I picked up a set of 4 mod glasses with orange, yellow and white stripes and olive wood bowls. And just when I thought I was done, I came across a leather backgammon set for a steal, which I just had to add to my collection!
Roman's, from the owners of Marlow & Sons and Reynards, is a friendly neighborhood spot just around the corner with locally sourced new American small plates. They serve great pizza during the day on weekends and it goes well with a seat at the bar and one of their aperitivos or a glass of wine. Maison May Vanderbilt is also a nice cafe and patisserie nearby for a caffein and sweet fix. Their more formal sister location Maison May Dekalb offers a tasty farm to table French menu and a beautiful private event space.
The one I am eager to try next is La Rina Pastificio & Vino which comes from the group behind AITA. I am charmed by the outdoor courtyard seating and the menu centered around both traditional and imaginative pasta dishes. The hero pasta choices are followed on the menu by an assortment of supporting dishes for enjoyment either before or after. And the pasta is for sale to take home!
For retail therapy and inspiration, visit the local boutiques like Thistle & Clover for contemporary clothing and accessories from both established and new designers or Feliz for chic gifts or home accents.
Fort Green Flea takes place on Saturdays 10-5pm at 176 Lafayette Ave. (btw. Clermont + Vanderbilt Ave.) through October 29th.
