Eats: Meet the Farmer & the Fish

Purdy's 18th Century Farmhouse

Purdy's 18th Century Farmhouse

It's peak apple picking season in New York state and as everyone floods into the numerous orchards upstate, I am more preoccupied about where we are going to have lunch and satisfy our appetite after a full morning of fresh air!

Set in North Salem NY only an hour from the city in a charming 18th century house, Purdy's has an effortlessly inviting atmosphere and bucolic feel with 22acres to surround it. Just like the warm fireplace, the friendly bar and creaking wood floor boards and staircase, the menu equally pleases with ease. The product of a Fishmonger and a chef who studied agriculture, the menu at once combines the freshness from the sea as well as the heartiness of the land - combining the best of the seaside with the country.

Inside, the walls are decorated with framed fishing photographs of children and family members, adding plenty of personal charm. The simplicity of the menu and freshness of the ingredients combined with the cozy setting provide all the right elements for a Saturday lunch. There's even a farmstand next door to take home some of the local charm.
